Professor Phil Brown is Strategic Lead for Research and Professor of Housing and Communities in the School of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Huddersfield, UK. With a background in housing policy, energy justice, and the social determinants of health, his research explores the intersections between retrofit, inequality, and place-based transformation. He is an academic partner on an Innovate UK-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership focused on decarbonising social housing through person-centred retrofit.
Phil’s work engages policy and practice audiences, drawing on critical policy analysis, co-production, and narrative methods to understand and influence systems change. He is committed to advancing research that delivers real-world impact in response to the climate and housing crises.
He is a Board Member of the UK Housing Studies Association and has served as a Special Advisor to the UK Parliament.
