Yananymul Mununggurr

Speaker

Yananymul Mununggurr is a Djapu woman, the chair for Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation and sits on several boards and councils advocating for liveability in the homelands. Yananymul is the daughter of Dhunggala Mununggurr who, alongside 11 other Yolngu people selected by Elders in 1963, signed the Yirrkala bark petitions which became the catalyst for the land rights movement and the ongoing fight for Aboriginal rights.

Her knowledge extends beyond land titles and includes education, health, family wellbeing, cultural maintenance, employment, environmental preservation of country and safe communities.

A public figure, she has on many occasions spoken of the important connection that land has to Yolngu culture. Yananymul has shown formidable courage throughout her professional career and will be making a profound contribution for many years to come.
